How Massage Works

What is the effect of a massage? Massage has many benefits for both physical and mental health. In addition to feeling pleasant and helping you relax, massage has many other (health) benefits. Want to try massaging at home? Even a home massage can offer these benefits. That’s a great reason to give it a try!

Stimulates Circulation

Massage stimulates blood circulation. Good circulation is necessary for removing waste products from the body. During a massage, the skin becomes warm and red, indicating increased blood flow. This allows waste products to be flushed out of the body more quickly, reducing muscle fatigue. That’s why it’s always recommended to drink plenty of water after a massage—it helps remove toxins from the body.

Improved circulation also ensures that nutrients and oxygen reach tissues more efficiently. Because massage enhances circulation, these essential elements can reach muscles more easily, leaving them feeling looser and more refreshed.

Helps with Full Relaxation

When you think of massage, you think of relaxation—and for good reason! A good massage helps promote deep relaxation. This can also be a goal when giving a home massage.

Relaxation is crucial in today’s busy world. Taking regular breaks for rest and relaxation helps you feel better, strengthens your immune system, improves balance, and enhances sleep quality.

Massage promotes relaxation in several ways. First, it gives you a much-needed break from the constant stimulation of screens, stress, and a never-ending to-do list. A massage allows you to truly disconnect and be in the moment.

Second, the improved circulation from massage warms the body, removes toxins, and helps muscles relax. This loosened-up feeling also contributes to overall relaxation.

Helps Reduce Pain

Massaging can reduce pain in sore muscles and tissues. Trigger points (muscle knots) are a common cause of pain and stiffness.

Massage helps reduce pain by breaking up trigger points. These knots are localized tight areas in muscles where circulation is poor. By stimulating blood flow in these areas, the muscle softens, leading to pain relief. A muscle with trigger points has reduced flexibility and movement. By working on these knots, the muscle feels less stiff, and movement becomes easier.

Other Benefits of Massage

Massage has many other benefits, including:

  • Boosting the immune system
  • Increasing energy levels
  • Improving mood
  • Enhancing breathing
  • Reducing stress
  • Stimulating metabolism
  • Improving posture
  • Enhancing sleep quality
  • Supporting lymphatic drainage
  • Balancing hormone levels
  • Promoting mind-body balance
  • Lowering heart rate and blood pressure

And we could go on and on.

All good reasons to give (or get) regular massages at home! Want to read further about how massage works? Then read our extensive blog on the subject.

Giving a Massage with the Right Techniques

It is important that if you are going to massage at home, you are familiar with some techniques. Just the basics, because you don't need to be a professional masseur to give a massage at home. Below you will find a number of techniques you can use if you are going to massage and have not (yet?) trained in them yourself. Of course, this is not the same as getting a massage from a professional and experienced masseur, but it is sometimes nice to try it out at home. These techniques will go a long way if you are just starting out in massage and want to give a full-body massage. And maybe you will enjoy giving a massage so much that you will take a course for it!

Tip: When you use these techniques, ask for feedback from the person you are massaging. That way, after a few massages, you will know exactly what he or she likes and dislikes!

    Massaging the Calves: Techniques

    kuiten masseren technieken

Start your home massage with the calves. Calves are often tense in people who exercise frequently, such as runners or soccer players. Begin with soft, gentle strokes from the bottom to the top. This helps the person receiving the massage get used to your hands while evenly distributing the massage oil.

Using both hands, massage upward from the heel toward the knee. Press lightly with your thumbs while keeping your fingers wrapped around the front of the lower leg. Avoid excessive pressure in the knee pit, as this is a sensitive area.

    Massaging the Feet: Techniques

A foot massage can be very relaxing. Apply firm (but not too strong) pressure to the soles of the feet. Use your thumbs to make circular movements, massaging both clockwise and counterclockwise.

Gently stroke the top of the foot from the ankle to the toes. To finish, hold each toe individually, gently rotate it, and apply light pressure underneath.

    Upper leg massage: techniques

The thigh muscles are large muscles. As a result, many techniques for massaging the upper legs are possible. One of the basic techniques is the hand-over-hand technique. Start at the bottom of the thigh at the hollow of the knee and move one hand upwards with pressure. After a few centimetres, switch hands. This is the hand-over-hand technique. Other techniques for massaging the thighs include using both hands side by side (as with the calves) or a tapping technique. With this tapping technique, you gently tap the thighs with relaxed hands. You use the side of your hands on the side of your little finger and alternate your left hand with your right hand. You can alternate these techniques when massaging the thighs.
Make sure you massage the entire thigh and massage through to the lower edge of the buttock. The side of the thigh on the outside is a place where a lot of waste accumulates. There is a tendon plate here that can be sensitive. It is important to include this area during your home massage as well. Find the right pressure, it should not be too painful.

    Massaging legs: techniques

By combining the above techniques of the thighs and calves, you can also massage the entire legs. When giving a massage, it is nice if the massage of one area spills over a bit into the other area. So never massage the calves for five minutes and then the thighs for five minutes, but also connect these areas during your massage. After focusing on the calves, use your techniques to massage the entire leg before moving on to focusing on the thigh.

    Massaging the Back: Techniques

    rug masseren technieken

There are many techniques for massaging the back. The back is a relatively large surface and a common area where people experience pain or stiffness. The back is essentially the foundation of your entire body. From the neck and spine, all nerves extend to the arms and legs. It is not surprising that the back is almost always included in a massage. You should also incorporate it into your home massage.

Before you begin, take a moment to observe the back. It is important to be mindful of the spine while massaging. The spine runs down the center of the back, and it is not pleasant to massage directly over it. Instead, always work alongside it.

Start massaging the back with stroking movements. To do this, distribute some massage oil over your hands, warm it up by rubbing your hands together, and begin spreading the oil evenly across the back of the person you are massaging. Do this in a calm and gentle manner, working from the lower back upwards with long strokes. Apply very little pressure at this stage. This technique helps spread the oil and allows your "client" to become accustomed to your hands on their back. Use both hands at the same time—one on the left side of the back and the other on the right. Ensure that the entire back is covered with a thin layer of oil. Once you feel the skin warming up and the oil is well distributed, you can begin more targeted massage techniques.

Next, start on one side of the spine and take note of the location of the shoulder blade. Since it is a bone, applying too much pressure over it may be uncomfortable, so be mindful of this.

One of the easiest and most enjoyable techniques for massaging the back is the hand-over-hand technique. Begin with one hand just above the pelvic area. Apply gentle pressure and move your hand upward along the spine. After about 10-15 centimeters, switch hands and continue until you reach the neck and shoulders. You can alternate this technique with stroking movements, which you started with. This can be done with two hands on one side of the back. With these strokes, you can apply more pressure than at the beginning of the massage.

After massaging one side of the back, repeat these techniques on the other side.

    Neck Massage Techniques

The neck requires special attention. Along with the shoulders, it is often a sensitive area, particularly for people who experience a lot of stress or spend long hours in a seated position. It is therefore important to include this area in every home massage. At the same time, the neck is a delicate region. If you are not experienced, be gentle and apply minimal pressure when massaging the neck.

One of the basic techniques for massaging the neck is to work from top to bottom. This means starting at the head and working down toward the shoulders. Again, begin with light stroking movements. Use your left hand to massage the left side of the neck and your right hand for the right side.

    Shoulder Massage Techniques

The shoulders and neck are closely connected. Most neck muscles extend into the shoulder muscles. Therefore, never massage just the neck or just the shoulders—always include both. The best shoulder massage techniques always incorporate the neck.

Shoulder muscles often carry a lot of tension. This makes it beneficial to massage them regularly, which can also be done at home.

One of the most effective techniques for massaging the shoulders is to move toward the arms. Start at the neck and glide your hands downward toward the shoulder cap. Similarly, massage from the upper back toward the shoulder cap and upper arms.

Be mindful of the shoulder blades when massaging the shoulders. It is not pleasant to apply excessive pressure directly on them, so always work around them. The best techniques for shoulder massage involve massaging from both the neck and upper back.

    Arm Massage Techniques

The techniques used for shoulder massage can easily transition into massaging the upper arms. After focusing on the shoulders for a few minutes, gradually shift your attention to the arms by extending your strokes down toward the elbows. Now, focus more specifically on massaging the arms.

There are several techniques you can use when massaging the arms. The direction of massage is less important. Some massage therapists prefer to always massage toward the heart. This would mean massaging from the hands toward the shoulders. However, if someone has cold hands, it may be more beneficial to do the opposite—massaging from the shoulders toward the hands. This encourages better blood circulation, helping the hands warm up.

A useful technique for arm massage is the hand-over-hand technique, where you alternate hands while applying pressure in smooth strokes. You can vary the length of these strokes—some can be short, while others can be longer.

Be careful when massaging around the elbows, as excessive pressure on bony areas can be uncomfortable. Avoid pressing too hard.

After massaging the arms, gradually transition into massaging the hands.

    Hand Massage Techniques

    handen masseren technieken

There are various techniques for massaging the hands, many of which are simple and can even be performed on yourself.

Massaging the hands is beneficial if you work with your hands often or experience cold hands. It also serves as a relaxing conclusion to a full-body massage.

One effective technique for massaging the hands is to use your thumb to make circular motions in the palm. Ensure that the pressure is not too light (to avoid a ticklish sensation) but also not too strong.

Other techniques involve massaging the fingers. To do this:

    • Hold one finger at a time and gently slide your hand toward the fingertip while applying light pressure.
    • Start with the thumb and work your way to the pinkie finger.
    • This method helps release tension in the hands and promotes relaxation.

End the hand massage gently, marking the conclusion of your entire home massage.

    Face and Head Massage Techniques

Do you want to give an extra extensive home massage? Try a head and face massage! Ask your "client" to turn from lying on their stomach to lying on their back. It is easiest if you can sit comfortably, so grab a stool or a chair. Cover the person again with a blanket or towels and start your head and face massage.

To massage the face, use gentle techniques. Start at the chin and move your hands slowly and softly upwards along the jawline. Repeat this a few times. Then move to the bridge of the nose, the point in the middle between the eyebrows. Move your fingers over the eyebrows towards the temples. Always in one direction, as moving against the eyebrow line is unpleasant. Repeat this a few times. Then, make gentle circular motions with your fingers on both temples. The person you are massaging may not find this comfortable and could feel pressure on their head. In that case, massage one side at a time.

Next, move on to the head massage. Ensure that people with long hair do not have a ponytail. Place your fingers from both hands on the head. Make small, gentle circular motions with your hands. Move your hands slightly and repeat this again. Make sure to massage the entire head this way. Don’t forget to massage the back of the head as well.

Extra Tips for Giving a Massage at Home

There are different ways to give a massage at home. Often, a home massage is focused on relieving pain. Someone may have neck pain and would like a massage. In most cases, this means a quick massage of the neck and shoulders. But how nice would it be to turn this into a true relaxation moment? Pampering someone completely is something everyone enjoys from time to time!

So, make your next home massage a real moment of relaxation. Here are some tips to help you:

    Create a Relaxing Atmosphere

A massage is all about relaxation. The atmosphere plays a key role in this. Make sure that you, as the masseur, are also relaxed and take your time for the home massage. Avoid giving a massage if you're in a hurry or not in the right mindset. The person receiving the massage will always notice, and this can affect the relaxing atmosphere.

You can enhance the ambiance by playing soft, calming music on a Bluetooth speaker. There are countless playlists with massage music on Spotify—just search for 'massage' and find a suitable playlist. Additionally, you can use an essential oil diffuser or incense for ultimate relaxation. Dim the lights, and consider using scented candles to create a warm and cozy environment.

    Ensure the Right Temperature

When receiving a massage, people are generally unclothed. If the temperature in the massage room is too low, the person getting massaged will feel cold, making relaxation difficult. Therefore, ensure that the room is comfortably warm.

During the massage, it is helpful to cover the areas of the body that are not being massaged with towels or a large cloth. This helps retain warmth and keeps the person comfortable.

For added comfort and a more luxurious experience, you can warm up the towels and massage oil. This can be done by placing them on a radiator. If you want a more professional approach, an oil warmer can be a great addition.

    Introduce the Massage

It is important not to start the massage abruptly but to introduce it gradually. Play some soft, calming music, have the person lie down on their stomach, and cover them with a towel or blanket.

Next, allow them to get used to your hands. Make sure your hands are warm and clean.

To begin, place your hands with light pressure on the lower legs of the person you are massaging. You can do this over the towel. Hold the pressure for a few seconds, then lift your hands and place them slightly higher on the legs, applying gentle pressure again. Move up in this manner along the legs, back, shoulders, and arms. By introducing the massage in this way, you help the person relax and become more aware of their body.

    Finish the massage

    masseren

After massaging the entire body, it is beneficial to consciously bring the session to an end. Allow the person you massaged to take a moment to recover. Cover them completely with a towel, blanket, or sheets and step out of the room for a brief moment. This provides them with the opportunity to relax in silence and at their own pace after the massage.

Offer them a glass of water or a cup of tea to help flush out toxins. It’s also advisable to encourage them to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Make sure you also consciously conclude the massage for yourself. You may notice that giving a massage puts you in a state of relaxation as well. After the session, wash your hands, take a few deep breaths, and take a moment to center yourself again.

Use a High-Quality Natural Massage Oil

Choosing a good massage oil is essential for a successful massage. Even for a home massage, it is best to use a natural massage oil. This ensures that the skin is well cared for during the massage. A natural oil is also much gentler on the skin compared to massage oils containing synthetic ingredients, reducing the risk of irritation.

Verana massage oil is a natural option, composed of five base oils enriched with essential oils for a pleasant scent. Each scent has its own benefits and is mild enough to enhance your massage experience without being overwhelming. Other Useful Products for a Home Massage

Certain products can improve your home massage experience. In addition to natural massage oil, consider using a massage table. While you may initially start massaging on a bed or couch, a massage table is essential if you plan on massaging regularly. A massage table helps maintain proper posture, preventing strain on your back, and allows for better access to both sides of the body. At ZenGrowth, we offer high-quality massage tables for every budget.

Other accessories can also elevate your home massage experience. A knee/foot bolster is a great addition, as it helps support the legs by slightly bending the knees, promoting relaxation in the leg muscles. If you don’t have a bolster, a rolled-up towel can also work.

For hygiene and to protect your massage table, a fitted sheet and face cradle cover are essential. These are basic necessities if you plan on giving massages frequently at home.

If you're looking for a way to practice self-massage, consider using an acupressure mat! This mat contains numerous acupressure points that stimulate circulation and help relieve tension and pain in various areas of the body.
