Looking for a massage table can be quite challenging due to the large variety of available options.
However, an important criterion that can help us logically and accurately choose one model over another is the weight capacity of the massage table.
It is important to remember that massage tables can show defects or even break if the weight capacity is exceeded. For example, if you offer Thai massages in your practice, where a lot of pressure is applied, you need a table that can support this extra weight.
Note: Many cheaper massage table manufacturers state an unrealistic weight capacity for their tables. If you expose the table to this weight, it could break!
The Maximum Weight of a Massage Table
The weight of a foldable massage table starts at around 10 kg (check out our lightest model), while the weight of a stationary massage table is slightly higher, around 40 to 50 kg. The difference depends on the material used for the frame (aluminum is lighter than wood) and the features, for example, a table with an adjustable backrest may be up to 3 kg heavier than a table without an adjustable backrest (with the same frame).
Static Weight and Dynamic Weight
When buying a massage table, we often notice that the static weight can be up to 4 times greater than the dynamic weight. In this article, we will explain the difference between static weight and dynamic weight.
Static Weight: What Is It?
Static weight represents the weight supported by the massage table when it is evenly distributed.In other words, a massage table with a static weight of 600 kg is like imagining placing a pallet with 600 kg evenly distributed across both ends of the table.
Therefore, the question is to what extent static weight should be a decision-making criterion, since in a practical setting for a massage therapist, the weight is never evenly distributed across the table.
Static weight is not a crucial factor to consider when purchasing a massage table.
Dynamic Weight: What Is It?
Dynamic weight or dynamic resistance represents the weight supported by the massage table, considering the client's weight on the table and the intensity during the massage.
It takes into account the pressure changes during the treatment, usually at one or two specific points.
This is an important criterion to consider, as dynamic weight corresponds to more realistic conditions than static weight.
For example, if you need to massage heavier clients, or if you specialize in rehabilitation massages or perform pressure-based massages like shiatsu, you should take dynamic weight into account.
Below is a video of a weight test where we drop a 200 kg weight onto our tables from a height of approximately 15 to 20 cm. This is a standard test used to determine the dynamic weight of a massage table.
We perform this test for all our premium massage tables, and it is done to simulate the reaction when a client 'jumps'onto the table to sit down at the start of the massage.

The weight capacity of a massage table is incredibly important, but the weight of the table itself is also something to keep in mind.
Are you working from home or need to travel a lot for your sessions? If you have to move around frequently, we would recommend purchasing a lighter model, while also considering the average weight of your clients and the type of massage you will be offering.
