What is the Immune System?
The immune system can be divided into three different components: the physical barrier, general defense, and specific defense.
The Physical Barrier
The physical barrier mainly consists of the skin. The skin prevents pathogens from entering the body. The mucous membranes in the airways and intestines are also part of the physical barrier, helping to keep out harmful substances. Additionally, stomach acid and saliva help reduce pathogens in the body.
General Defense
The general defense of the immune system attacks all pathogens that enter the body. Phagocytes in white blood cells work to clear and destroy these invaders as quickly as possible.
Specific Defense
Specific defense involves T-cells and B-cells, which fight specific pathogens. This part of the immune system remembers pathogens that have previously entered the body, allowing for a faster and more effective response in the future (such as with viruses one has had before). This type of immunity is built up over a lifetime.
The Effect of Stress on the Immune System
Stress itself is not inherently bad—it prepares the body for action, such as fleeing from danger or enhancing performance in crucial moments. However, chronic stress becomes problematic.
When the body is under prolonged stress, physiological reactions trigger a "fight or flight" response, prioritizing immediate survival over functions like healing and immune response. As a result, long-term stress weakens the immune system, making the body more susceptible to illness.
Massage: A Boost for Your Immune System
Massage has many positive effects on both body and mind. It promotes relaxation, relieves tension, and improves sleep.
But did you know that massage also benefits the immune system?
Stress weakens immune function, but regular massages help reduce stress and tension, allowing the body time to recover. Massage-induced relaxation also improves sleep, which in turn strengthens the immune system. Taking time for self-care fosters compassion for oneself and provides a moment of reflection—massage offers a perfect opportunity for this, making it a valuable tool for maintaining a strong immune system.
The Effect of Essential Oils on the Immune System
Certain essential oils are believed to have a positive impact on immune function. While scientific evidence is still emerging, some studies suggest promising effects.
Antiviral Massage Oil
Using an antiviral massage oil during a massage can provide an extra boost to the immune system. By incorporating specific essential oils, these massage oils may offer antiviral properties. We currently offer four types of antiviral massage oils:
Cinnamon Massage Oil: A Scent of Comfort
Massage oil with cinnamon essential oil has antiviral and antibacterial properties, strengthening the immune system. The warm, spicy scent evokes feelings of comfort and nostalgia—think of winter, childhood, and freshly baked apple pie. Cinnamon essential oil also provides a warming effect on both body and mind while helping to relieve muscle tension.
Bergamot Massage Oil: A Light Citrus Scent
Massage oil with bergamot essential oil has antiviral properties and a refreshing citrus aroma. Extracted from bergamot oranges, this essential oil is the key ingredient in Earl Grey tea. It is often used to support respiratory health and relieve colds, while also promoting relaxation and a positive mental state.
Maral Root Massage Oil: A Fruity Aroma
Massage oil with maral root essential oil also possesses antiviral properties and has a pleasant fruity scent. Although not widely known in the Netherlands, maral root oil is frequently used in Siberia to treat colds and flu. This massage oil has a deeply calming effect and promotes a positive mood, further supporting the immune system.
Eucalyptus Massage Oil: The Classic Cold Remedy
Massage oil with eucalyptus essential oil has both antiviral and antibacterial properties. Due to its strong antiseptic and germ-killing effects, eucalyptus oil is commonly used for preventing infectious diseases. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and provides relief from cold symptoms.
A massage can help support the immune system. By using an antiviral massage oil during a massage, you can provide even greater immune support!
