Zwangerschapsmassage: Even tijd voor jezelf!

Pregnancy... One of the most beautiful and special experiences in life. However, it’s a fact that pregnancy demands a lot from the body and mind. The body works incredibly hard during pregnancy!

That’s why more and more women are opting for a pregnancy massage during this time. A wonderful opportunity to relax, and it can even help relieve certain physical complaints, 1+1=2! And most importantly, it’s safe for the baby! Of course, we must mention that it’s essential to choose a massage therapist who is knowledgeable about massaging a pregnant woman!

What is a pregnancy massage?

A pregnancy massage is a soothing relaxation massage specifically designed for pregnant women. The massage is performed by a therapist who is specialized in this type of massage.

The therapist avoids pressure points that are connected to the uterus, as these could cause contractions. Additionally, deep massages could release too many waste products and overstimulate the hormonal balance and blood circulation.

During this massage, you can choose to lie on your side, but you can also lie on your stomach if the therapist has a special pregnancy massage table.

What are the benefits of a pregnancy massage?

Better sleep. Pregnant women who receive regular massages sleep better, which is great for overall well-being during pregnancy.

Relaxation. The techniques used during a pregnancy massage trigger the release of chemicals in your body, such as oxytocin (the "feel-good" hormone), leading to a deeply relaxed feeling. Massage also helps reduce cortisol (the stress hormone). And a relaxed mom means a relaxed baby!

Pain relief. During pregnancy, you may experience back pain, pelvic pain, and leg pain, and a massage can provide excellent relief, especially when done regularly.

Improved blood circulation. Massage improves blood circulation and the lymphatic system, helping your body eliminate waste products more effectively.

Reduced risk of preterm birth. Studies have shown that receiving pregnancy massages reduces the likelihood of preterm birth and complications during labor.

How often can you get a pregnancy massage?

Most pregnant women opt for a massage about once every 4 to 6 weeks. Once the pregnancy reaches the third trimester, women often come once every two weeks. This is when the belly becomes heavier, and the accompanying pregnancy aches and pains become more intense. So, there is really no limit! A (pregnancy) massage is recommended starting from the second trimester, which is from 12 weeks onwards. The risk of miscarriage is higher in the first trimester. While it has not been proven that massage increases this risk, massage therapists generally avoid taking any chances.

When is a pregnancy massage not recommended?

As mentioned above, it is advised not to get a (pregnancy) massage during the first trimester. During a massage, many waste products are released, which could potentially be harmful to the baby. It is also crucial to consult with your midwife before getting a massage, especially if you have high or low blood pressure. In cases of thrombosis, varicose veins, heart conditions, or fever, a massage is usually not recommended.

Pressure points

Certain pressure points can affect the pregnancy. It's important to note that risks only arise when excessive and prolonged pressure is applied to these points. For example, about two centimeters below the ankle bone on the inside of your foot is an important pressure point that connects with the uterus. This pressure point is perfectly fine to use if you're overdue and have tried everything to bring on labor, but it is definitely not recommended during your pregnancy!

A pregnancy massage table

A pregnancy massage should be as comfortable, relaxing, and pleasant as possible for the expectant mother. And of course, a pregnancy massage table is essential! This table is specially designed for pregnant women and features a cut-out for the belly and one for the breasts. The cut-out contains an elastic bottom that supports the belly. This is very comfortable for many women, as the weight of the belly is supported, reducing lower back and/or pelvic pain. It is also ideal for women with larger breasts or those who are more curvy.

Are you looking for a beautiful and sturdy pregnancy massage table? We recommend the ZenGrowth Pregnancy Massage Table Ipanema. It features a thick mattress made of 3 foam layers. The upholstery is made of environmentally friendly Nanotouch PU leather, which feels extremely comfortable on the skin. If your client feels more comfortable lying on their side during the massage, this is also possible. You can simply fill the cut-outs with the provided cushions.

Which massages are suitable during pregnancy?

In general, it is important to always receive a massage during pregnancy from a therapist who has knowledge of pregnancy massage. As mentioned earlier, there are a few pressure points that should be avoided during a massage. To be sure which massages are suitable during pregnancy, we recommend contacting a therapist to get informed.

A few more practical tips!

Massaging with a massage oil that contains essential oils is still a bit of a gray area. There are some essential oils that can help alleviate common pregnancy-related issues. However, we recommend not using essential oils without proper knowledge. Always consult a doctor or therapist to ensure it is safe!

Citrus scents like mandarin, grapefruit, and bergamot have the wonderful ability to reduce stress, tension, and anxiety. They give your mood a boost! And the best part... they can also help with nausea.

Lavender has a calming effect, soothes the skin, and brings the mind into balance. Additionally, lavender has disinfectant and pain-relieving properties, which is great for the pregnancy pains that can arise.

Rose scent can reduce anxiety and help with calming, as well as promote better sleep. Rose oil, like lavender oil, can reduce stress during labor. The effects of lavender and rose are quite similar, so if you don't like lavender, you can opt for rose oil, and vice versa.

Of course, an odorless massage oil is also certainly suitable for a pregnancy massage. Not every woman can tolerate scents during pregnancy. For this, we have specially designed Pro-2 and Pro-1 (for facial massages) massage oils. If you’d like to add a fragrance to the Pro-1 or Pro-2 oils, our essential oils are the perfect solution! Just add a few drops to the oil or mix two scents together for your own unique blend.

Of course, everyone is different, and every pregnant woman experiences her pregnancy differently. One woman may prefer lying on her stomach during the massage, while another may feel more comfortable lying on her side. Both options are perfectly fine! You can also opt for extra support during side-lying. For this, we recommend our half-moon pillow. It provides great support and doesn't slip away!

Drinking water

Drinking water is always good for your body! But with a massage, your body's circulation and metabolism are stimulated. As a result, your body works harder to eliminate waste products, which means it needs more water to carry out this task successfully.
